ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Where Language Meets Science

The Department of Languages and Linguistics grew out of the former Department of Language and Literature of the defunct Northeast College of Arts and Science (NECAS). Upon takeover by the University of Maiduguri in 1975/1976, it was divided into two departments: English & Foreign Languages and Nigerian Languages and Linguistics. In 1977, it was reorganised into the Department of English and the Department of Languages and Linguistics, the latter comprising French, Nigerian languages and Linguistics.

Vision

To provide a platform for excellence in the dissemination of linguistics knowledge and scholarship in Nigeria and the world, generating manpower in language research and teaching.

Mission

To produce the next generation of linguists who will pursue successful research and teaching careers, and intellectual positions in language documentation, using relevant digital tools and 21st-century skills.

Philosophy

We produce well-rounded, globally competitive linguists who can adapt to the dynamics of the human condition, addressing deficits in training and expanding participation in national development and the global economy.

On behalf of the staff and students, I warmly welcome you to the Department of Languages and Linguistics, Faculty of Arts, University of Maiduguri. Since its establishment in 1977, the Department has grown into a vibrant academic community offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Linguistics and Nigerian languages such as Hausa, Kanuri, Fulfulde, French and Arabic. Our vision is to provide excellence in teaching, research, and documentation of languages, while preparing graduates to contribute meaningfully to national development and global scholarship.

ADMISSION

Undergraduate Admission Guidelines

UTME Admission

✓ Five (5) credit passes in SSCE/NECO in not more than two sittings, including English Language.
✓ Credit pass in an African Language is an advantage.
✓ Must meet the University's UTME cut‑off mark for the academic session.
✓ Must pass the University's post‑UTME screening.

Direct Entry

✓ Five (5) credit passes in SSCE/NECO including English Language.
✓ At least two (2) Advanced Level passes in relevant subjects.
✓ Minimum of Merit grade in University/National Diploma (ND) or NCE in any relevant field.
✓ Candidates for Combined Honours must satisfy admission requirements for both departments.

Duration

• 4 years (8 semesters) for UTME candidates
• 3 years (6 semesters) for Direct Entry candidates

Graduation Requirements

• Minimum CGPA: Not less than 1.00
• Minimum of 120 credit units for UTME
• Minimum of 90 credit units for Direct Entry

Before making a submission, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

What programmes does the department offer?

The department offers nine undergraduate programmes including single honours (French, Hausa, Kanuri) and combined honours (Linguistics with Arabic, English, French, Fulfulde, Hausa, or Kanuri). We also offer M.A. and Ph.D. programmes in General Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Kanuri Studies, Hausa, and French.

What are the admission requirements?

For UTME: Five credit passes in SSCE/NECO including English, and a pass in the University's post-UTME screening. Direct Entry: Five credits including English, plus two A-Level passes or a Merit in ND/NCE.

Can I combine Linguistics with another discipline?

Yes. We offer combined honours programmes: Linguistics/Arabic, Linguistics/English, Linguistics/French, Linguistics/Fulfulde, Linguistics/Hausa, and Linguistics/Kanuri.

What career opportunities are available for graduates?

Graduates pursue careers in teaching, research, translation, interpretation, media, publishing, public administration, diplomacy, language documentation, lexicography, artificial intelligence, and language technology.
